Bright & Bold: Frida Kahlo
Frida Kahlo was a Mexican painter who was famed for her self-portraits all painted with passion, flair, feeling and all the boldest, brightest colours.
Known to have been as bold and colourful in person as in her paintings, she is now recognised as an icon of femininity, with multiple movies made about her life and her image utilised across everything from art prints and puzzles to books and fashion.
One of the reasons why her image is so famous is that she never conformed to traditional views of beauty. She had her own style – flowing dresses and skirts in bright fabrics, often reflecting traditional Mexican designs. She also never plucked her eyebrows, with her ‘monobrow’ one of her most iconic features. She chose how her beauty would define her, not the other way around.
She was also fiercely independent and intelligent (all amazing traits we celebrate here at Franc.World!).
Her portraits and art are also very emotional, depicting love and sorrow, life and loss – something we can all relate to.
Born in 1907 (dying in 1954), she overcame sickness and a major accident to become the famous artist and pop-culture icon she is today – her work ethic and drive as amazing as her art.
