Oktoberfest!

Germany’s favourite festival - Oktoberfest, starts this week in Munich. The festival originated on October 12, 1810, in celebration of the marriage of the crown prince of Bavaria and has been celebrated nearly every year since.

Beloved as one of the world’s great parties, Oktoberfest is an annual tradition that runs for two weeks and sees over six million international and national visitors attend to eat traditional foods, enjoy live entertainment and drink beer – a lot of beer - over seven million litres in fact!

While we don’t necessarily recommend drinking that much beer (or drinking any beer at all if you’re a tween or teen!), we do recommend you exploring all the great culture, history and food this fun event has to offer.

What to Eat: Wow! Where to begin! Start with warm, fresh pretzels, move onto traditional wursts (sausages) in breadrolls (think hotdogs but waaay better), then finish with Black Forest Cake. Yum!

What to Wear: Why a Dirndl of course! Well that is if you’re a female. If you’re a male its lederhosen. Not sure what a dirndl or lederhosen are? Check out our handy pinterest board below for reference!

What to Do: Invite your friends and family around, put on a ‘traditional German music’ playlist, eat delicious food and if you want to go all out, make dessert beer mugs (recipe also on our pinterest page), where you fill tall glasses with orange jelly and top with lemon cream or even vanilla ice-cream.
